Product Introduction
Fast transients need fast measurement. A motor short circuit can produce a 10x current spike in 1 ms. The 531X185CPTAMG1 captures that transient with 2 kHz sampling—catching faults before the protection system trips.
The AMG1 is the high-speed transducer board for the 1850 platform. It replaced the AKG1, which had 1 kHz sampling. GE doubled the sampling rate to 2 kHz, added a high-speed ADC, and kept the same 14-bit resolution. I’ve used the AMG1 on a high-speed compressor—the board caught a current transient that lasted 2 ms, and the protection system tripped the drive before the motor was damaged.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AMG1 boards were produced from 2012 through 2015. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a high-speed ADC (Analog Devices AD7606) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we check the CT and VT terminal blocks for bent pins. Accessories: we inventory the 6 CT terminal plugs and the calibration plug.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1850 drive simulator with a 5 A AC current source, a 600 V AC voltage source, a Fluke 712 RTD calibrator, and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V and 24 V supplies from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 flashes during measurement; D3 stays off.
Speed test: we inject a 1 kHz sine wave into the CT input—the board must track the signal with less than 1° phase lag (250 µs). CT accuracy test: we inject 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 A AC—the reading must be within 0.2%. VT accuracy test: we inject 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 V AC—the reading must be within 0.2%. RTD test: we inject 0 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C—the reading must be within 0.5 °C. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.
Firmware Verification
We read the firmware version—the AMG1 runs firmware v3.05 or later.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Calibration certificate included. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date, firmware version, and inspector ID.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. Sampling Rate—2 kHz Fixed
The AMG1’s sampling rate is fixed at 2 kHz. If the application needs 5 kHz, this is the wrong board.
2. CT Polarity—Match the Phase
The CT inputs are polarized. ❗
3. VT Phase Connection—Match the CT
The VT inputs must be connected to the same phases as the CTs.
4. RTD Wiring—3-Wire Only
Use 3-wire RTDs.
5. Ground Loops—Single-Point Grounding
The CT and VT inputs are grounded at the source end. Don’t ground the shield at the board end.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2015 production. The high-speed ADC is factory-tested. The CT and VT inputs have zero hours.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The high-speed ADC degrades with age—a refurbished board might have reduced sampling rate. The CT inputs might have drift—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.5% CT error.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A high-speed compressor misses a current transient—the drive trips on overcurrent, and the process stops. Cost: 30,000. The refurbished AMG1 cost 1,300; the new surplus board costs 1,600. Pay the 300.
