Description

Product Introduction

Large drives need precise current and voltage measurement—for protection, control, and monitoring. The 531X185CPTAKG1 gives you 6 CT inputs, 4 VT inputs, and 4 RTD inputs in a single board—covering all the measurement needs of a large AC or DC drive.

The AKG1 is the precision transducer board for the 1850 platform—the large drives for pumps, fans, and compressors. It replaced the AJG1, which had 4 CT inputs and no VT inputs. GE added VT inputs and RTD inputs, and upgraded the ADC to 14-bit. I’ve used the AKG1 on a 6,000 HP compressor—the board measured the motor currents (CTs), line voltages (VTs), and winding temperatures (RTDs), providing the protection system with accurate data.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)

Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AKG1 boards were produced from 2012 through 2015. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a precision ADC (Analog Devices AD7691) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we check the CT and VT terminal blocks for bent pins. The RTD headers must be free of corrosion. Accessories: we inventory the 6 CT terminal plugs and the calibration plug.

Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1850 drive simulator with a 5 A AC current source, a 600 V AC voltage source, a Fluke 712 RTD calibrator, and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V and 24 V supplies from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 flashes during measurement; D3 stays off.

CT test: we inject 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 A AC into each CT input—the reading must be within 0.2% of the injected value. VT test: we inject 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 V AC into each VT input—the reading must be within 0.2%. RTD test: we inject 0 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C into each RTD input—the reading must be within 0.5 °C. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.

Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.

Firmware Verification
We read the firmware version—the AKG1 runs firmware v2.05 or later.

Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Calibration certificate included. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date, firmware version, and inspector ID.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

1. CT Polarity—Match the Phase
The CT inputs are polarized. If you reverse the polarity on one phase, the phase angle measurements are wrong. ❗ Match the CT polarity to the phase.

2. VT Phase Connection—Match the CT
The VT inputs must be connected to the same phases as the CTs. If the VT is on phase A but the CT is on phase B, the power calculation is wrong.

3. RTD Wiring—3-Wire Only
Use 3-wire RTDs. 2-wire RTDs add lead resistance error.

4. Input Range—Don’t Exceed 600 V
The VT inputs are rated for 600 V AC. We saw a site with a 690 V system—the VT input overloaded. Use an external voltage divider.

5. Ground Loops—Single-Point Grounding
The CT and VT inputs are grounded at the source end. Don’t ground the shield at the board end.

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2015 production. The ADC is factory-tested. The CT and VT inputs have zero hours.

Refurbished risk in plain terms
The CT inputs might have drift—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.5% CT error. The ADC’s reference drifts—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.2% offset.

Real cost of a refurbished failure
A 6,000 HP compressor’s current measurement is off by 0.5%—the protection trips on a false overcurrent. Cost: 30,000. The refurbished AKG1 cost 1,200; the new surplus board costs 1,500. Pay the 300.

What we provide as proof
Original GE box label photo. CT/VT/RTD accuracy verified. Calibration certificate. Isolation test passed. Anti-static bag sealed.

Performance Benchmarks & Test Results

All tests run on a GE 1850 drive simulator, ambient 25 °C ±1 °C, 5.00 V DC logic supply, firmware v2.05.

Test Condition Measured Result Notes
CT accuracy (5 A) ±0.15%
VT accuracy (600 V) ±0.15%
RTD accuracy (100 °C) ±0.3 °C
Sampling rate 1.0 kHz
Isolation resistance >20 MΩ at 500 V
5 V current draw 0.88 A at 5.00 V
MTBF 40,000 hours Derates to 20,000 hours at 55 °C

Field reality: The AKG1 is a precision measurement board—6 CT inputs, 4 VT inputs, 4 RTD inputs, 14-bit resolution, and 2,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on 6,000 HP compressors and large drive systems. The CT and VT measurements are accurate—0.2%—enough for protection and control. The RTD inputs are a bonus—they eliminate the need for a separate temperature board. The AKG1 is a reliable precision measurement board for large drives.
