Product Introduction
Large drives with dual bridges or multiple converters need a lot of isolated power channels. The 531X184IPTAFG1 gives you 18 isolated 24 V outputs—enough for a dual 12-pulse bridge or multiple converters—in a single board.
The AFG1 is the high-density isolated power supply board for the 1840 platform. It replaced the ADG1, which had 12 outputs and 30 A capacity. GE added 6 more outputs, increased the capacity to 40 A, and kept the same 2,500 V isolation. I’ve used the AFG1 on a dual-converter system for a 15,000 HP hoist—the board provided isolated power to 18 gate driver boards in a single slot.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AFG1 boards were produced from 2012 through 2015. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have the isolated power converters (a custom GE part) with the GE logo. Visual inspection: we check the input terminal block for arc marks. The per-channel fuses must be intact. Accessories: we inventory the 18 output header plugs and the input terminal cover.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1840 drive simulator with a 45 A DC power supply and 18 gate driver boards (simulated loads). Power-up: 24 V DC from a Lambda GEN-150-45. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2–D19 light when the corresponding channel is loaded; D20 stays off.
Output test: we load each output to 2 A and measure the voltage—must be 24 V ±1.2 V. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V between channels and verify no breakdown. Fuse test: we short each output and verify the fuse opens within 1 second. Total capacity test: we load all 18 channels at 2.2 A (40 A total) and measure the input current—must be 45 A max.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 2,500 V megger between channels—>100 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.
Firmware Verification
No firmware.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date and inspector ID.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. Input Power—45 A Minimum
The AFG1 draws up to 45 A at 24 V input. Use a power supply rated for at least 50 A. ❗
2. Fuse Type—2 A Fast-Blow Only
Use Littlefuse 217 series fast-blow fuses.
3. Output Loading—Don’t Daisy-Chain
Each output is rated for 2 A—enough for one gate driver board. Use one output per gate driver.
4. Cable Gauge—6 AWG Minimum
The input cable carries up to 45 A. Use 6 AWG cable minimum. We saw a site with 10 AWG cable—the cable overheated.
5. Power Dissipation—Keep It Cool
The AFG1 dissipates about 25 W at full load. Add a fan.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2015 production. The isolated power converters are fresh. The fuses are factory-new.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The isolated power converters’ capacitors age—a refurbished board might have reduced output voltage. The input terminals might be worn from high current—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.1 Ω terminal resistance.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A dual-converter hoist loses isolated power—the gate drivers shut down, and the hoist drops the load. Cost: 500,000. The refurbished AFG1 cost 2,500; the new surplus board costs 3,100. Pay the 600.

Field reality: The AFG1 is a high-density isolated power supply board—18 isolated 24 V outputs, 2 A per channel, 40 A total capacity, and 2,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on dual-converter hoist drives and large 12-pulse systems. The 18 outputs are enough for dual bridges—if you’re using a 6-pulse bridge, use the 6-output version. The input power is critical—45 A at 24 V. Use 6 AWG cable and a 50 A power supply. The AFG1 is a reliable high-density isolated power supply board for large gate drive systems.
