Product Introduction
Large drives need temperature monitoring on multiple points—motor windings (3 phases), bearings (2 ends), and cooling system (inlet/outlet). The 531X171TMAABG1 gives you 12 temperature inputs: 8 thermocouple and 4 RTD channels—enough for comprehensive motor protection.
The ABG1 is the temperature monitoring board for the 1710 platform—the large AC drives for pumps, fans, and compressors. It replaced the AAG1, which had 6 TC and 2 RTD inputs. GE added 2 more TC and 2 more RTD channels, and upgraded the CJC accuracy to ±0.5 °C. I’ve used the ABG1 on a 6,000 HP boiler feed pump—the board monitored the motor’s six winding RTDs and two bearing thermocouples. When the bearing temperature rose 10 °C above normal, the board’s alarm output saved the pump from failure.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—ABG1 boards were produced from 2010 through 2014. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a precision ADC (Analog Devices AD7091) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we check the terminal blocks for bent pins. The CJC sensor (LM35) must be present. Accessories: we inventory the calibration plug and the 12 jumper shunts.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1710 drive simulator with a Fluke 712 thermocouple calibrator, a Fluke 712 RTD calibrator, and a temperature chamber. Power-up: 5 V DC from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 (yellow) flashes; D3 stays off.
TC test: we inject 0 °C, 100 °C, and 500 °C into each TC channel—the reading must be within ±1 °C. RTD test: we inject 0 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C into each RTD channel—the reading must be within ±0.5 °C. CJC test: we place the board in a thermal chamber at 0 °C, 25 °C, and 50 °C—the CJC must track within ±0.5 °C. Open-circuit test: we open one TC and one RTD connection—the readings must go to -50 °C and -100 °C within 1 second. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger between the TC/RTD field side and logic—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.
Firmware Verification
We read the firmware version—the ABG1 runs firmware v2.04 or later.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date, firmware version, and inspector ID.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. Thermocouple Type—Match the Sensor
The ABG1 supports J/K/T types. If you select the wrong type, the reading is off. ❗
2. RTD Wiring—3-Wire Only
The ABG1 supports Pt100 RTDs in 3-wire configuration. If you use 2-wire RTDs, the lead resistance adds error—0.4 °C per ohm. Use 3-wire RTDs.
3. Thermocouple Polarity—Correct Wiring
Double-check before power-up.
4. CJC Accuracy—Let It Stabilize
The CJC sensor needs 15 minutes to reach thermal equilibrium.
5. Ground Loops—Single-Point Grounding
The thermocouple input is grounded at the sensor end. Don’t ground the shield at the board end.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2014 production. The ADC is fresh. The CJC sensor is factory-calibrated.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The CJC sensor drifts with age—a refurbished board might have a 1 °C CJC error. The ADC’s reference drifts—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.5 °C offset.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A 6,000 HP compressor’s bearing temperature is read 5 °C low—the bearing fails. Cost: 60,000. The refurbished ABG1 cost 900; the new surplus board costs 1,200. Pay the 300.

Field reality: The ABG1 is a temperature monitoring board—8 TC and 4 RTD inputs, 14-bit resolution, 2 Hz sampling, and 2,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on large pumps, compressors, and fans. The 3-wire RTD connection is a must—2-wire RTDs introduce lead resistance errors. And the CJC sensor must stabilize before calibration—30 minutes. The ABG1 is a reliable temperature monitor for large drives.
