Description

Product Introduction

The 531X111PSHAGG1 is GE’s final and most refined 1000W power supply for the Mark V system. It delivers the same brute-force capacity as the FG2, but with a refreshed thermal design—the dual fans are now hot-swappable, the heatsink was redesigned for better airflow, and the efficiency was pushed to 94% at full load. It’s the supply you want for the most extreme Mark V rack configurations.

Compared to the 531X111PSHAFG2, the “G1” revision represents the culmination of GE’s power supply development for the Mark V platform: the dual fans are now field-replaceable without powering down the supply, the efficiency was bumped from 93% to 94% at full load, and the hold-up time was extended from 55ms to 60ms. The terminal assignment is identical—direct drop-in. No firmware changes required.

Compatible Replacement Models

Model Classification Notes & Labor Estimate
531X111PSHAGG1 ✅ Drop-in Replacement Target model. Same form factor and backplane connector. No changes.
531X111PSHAFG2 ✅ Drop-in Replacement Earlier 1000W revision—38A inrush, 55ms hold-up, 93% efficiency. Direct swap; you get lower inrush, longer hold-up, and better efficiency.
531X111PSHAFG1 ✅ Drop-in Replacement Original 1000W version—45A inrush. Direct swap; the G1 is a significant upgrade.
531X111PSHAEH1 ✅ Drop-in Replacement 800W version (33.3A). Direct swap, but verify load—the GG1 has more capacity.
DS3800NPSA ❌ Hardware Incompatible Mark IV power supply—different form factor. Not compatible.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What’s the main improvement in the GG1 over the FG2?
The GG1 has hot-swappable fans—you can replace a failed fan while the supply is running without powering down the rack. The efficiency was improved to 94% (vs. 93%), reducing heat generation by about 10W at full load. The hold-up time increased to 60ms (vs. 55ms), giving your UPS more time to transfer. The extended operating temperature range (60°C vs. 55°C) is also a welcome change for hot cabinets. The inrush current was reduced from 38A to 35A, placing less stress on upstream breakers.

Q: How do I replace a fan on the GG1 while the supply is running?
The fans are modular and hot-swappable. Each fan has a finger-grip handle and a locking latch. To replace a fan: (1) pull the latch to release it, (2) slide the fan module out, (3) slide in the new fan, (4) press the latch to lock it. The fan will start automatically. You can replace one fan at a time—the other fan continues running, so the supply stays cool enough. We recommend keeping spare fan modules on hand—they’re standard 92mm x 25mm, 12V DC units rated at 50 CFM. We can supply them separately.

Q: The Fault LED is red, but the DC OK LED is green. What’s happening?
Green DC OK means the 24V output is within spec. Red Fault indicates an internal warning—typically overtemperature (fan failure or blocked airflow) or an input voltage out of range (below 85VAC or above 265VAC). The GG1 has dual hot-swappable fans—check both. If one fan fails, the Fault LED will light to warn you, but the supply can continue running with reduced airflow. The GG1’s thermal sensor triggers the fault at 80°C—if the temperature reaches 85°C, the supply will shut down.

Q: The inrush current is 35A peak. Is that a concern for my branch breaker?
35A peak for 2ms is within the tolerance of most 20A C-curve breakers. The GG1’s inrush is 3A lower than the FG2’s—a small but meaningful improvement. If you have multiple GG1s in a panel (e.g., two supplies in separate racks), the combined inrush of 70A may trip a 30A breaker on startup. Use D-curve breakers (which tolerate higher inrush) or sequence the power-up of the supplies by stagerring the AC feeds. We recommend dedicated 30A branch circuits for each GG1.

Q: The Overload LED is amber. What does that mean?
Amber Overload LED indicates the supply is drawing more than its continuous rating (41.6A). At loads between 41.6A and 50A, it’ll light amber and continue running—but the output voltage may droop (down to 22V). If the load exceeds 50A, the supply enters foldback current limiting (output drops to about 12V, and the LED flashes). Check your rack’s total load with a clamp meter on the backplane’s 24V line. If you’re consistently seeing amber, consider adding a second GG1 in parallel.

Q: Can I run two GG1 supplies in parallel for redundancy?
Yes—the GG1 has internal OR-ing diodes. Connect the DC outputs together (+24V to +24V, 0V to 0V) and feed the AC inputs from separate breakers. Each supply will share the load roughly equally (within 5%). The blue “Load Share” LED will light when both supplies are contributing. If one fails, the other takes the full load. In a redundant configuration, each supply should be sized for 50% of the load—for a 35A total load, two GG1s would each carry about 17.5A.

Q: Can I hot-swap the GG1 while the rack is powered?
The board supports hot-swapping when used in a redundant configuration (two supplies in parallel). In a single-supply configuration, pulling the supply will immediately shut down the entire rack—a guaranteed turbine trip. If you have redundant supplies, you can pull one—but only if the OR-ing diodes are present (they’re internal to the GG1). Verify the DC outputs are connected together before attempting.

Q: What’s the expected lifespan of the GG1?
The electrolytic capacitors are rated for 12,000 hours at 85°C. In a 40°C cabinet, the lifespan extends to about 18-22 years. The hot-swappable 92mm fans are each rated for 60,000 hours at 40°C (about 6.8 years). The GG1’s improved efficiency and dual-fan design help the capacitors run cooler, extending their life vs. the FG2. We recommend replacing both fans every 5-7 years proactively.

Q: What’s the lead time for a surplus unit?
We keep 2-3 units in stock. Domestic: 2-3 business days ground, overnight if ordered by 2 PM EST. International: 5-7 days via DHL, with customs potentially adding 1-3 days. This board is not ITAR-controlled, so we can ship to most countries without an export license. We include a GE certificate of origin and commercial invoice with every shipment.
