Description
Product Introduction
That water treatment plant in Arizona—the one with the backup genset sitting outside in the desert—had a problem with the controller display. After two years of direct sun, the LCD was unreadable, and the keypad membrane had cracked. The plant manager was ready to replace the whole AGC controller. I pointed at the OPM-1 sitting in their stores, never installed. “That,” I said, “would have prevented this.” We swapped the controller, installed the OPM-1 over it, and that new display is still readable three years later.
The DEIF OPM-1 isn’t an electronic module—it’s a mechanical shield. A hinged, clear polycarbonate cover that mounts over DEIF’s AGC (Automatic Genset Controller) and PPU (Power Protection Unit) series. It gives you IP54 protection: dust-resistant and protected against splashing water from any direction. The cover flips up for access to the keypad and display, and latches closed when not in use. There’s a cutout so you can see the display clearly, and the keypad is usable through the cover (membrane-to-membrane contact). It’s simple, but in outdoor installations—or anywhere with washdown requirements—it’s the difference between a controller lasting five years and twenty.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
It’s a mechanical part, but we still inspect every one.
- Incoming Verification
- Match the model: OPM-1. (There’s an OPM-2 for different controller sizes.)
- Visual inspection: Check the clear cover for scratches, crazing, or bubbles.
- Inspect the hinge—should move smoothly, no binding.
- Check the latch—snaps closed securely, releases with thumb pressure.
- Fit Test
- Mount the OPM-1 on a test panel with an AGC-4 controller installed.
- Verify the cover closes without interfering with the controller.
- Check that all keypad buttons are accessible and responsive through the cover.
- Verify the display is fully visible through the clear window.
- Seal Check
- Close and latch the cover.
- Run water from a spray bottle at the seams—no water should enter.
- (We don’t pressure-test, just basic splash verification.)
- Final QC & Packaging
- QC sticker with inspection date.
- Wrap in protective film (to prevent scratching during shipping).
- Box with foam padding.
- No electronic test report, but we include a photo of the fit test.
Field Installation Pitfalls
I’ve installed these in everything from desert solar farms to Arctic drilling sites. Here’s where people go wrong.
❗Controller Compatibility
The OPM-1 fits specific AGC and PPU models. It won’t fit the larger AGC-5 or older Muti-line 2 controllers. Check your controller model before ordering.
Mounting Screw Length
The OPM-1 comes with screws. If you use longer screws, you might hit the controller PCB. Stick with the supplied hardware.
Seal Integrity
The IP54 rating depends on the cover being fully latched. If you leave it unlatched, water can get in. Train operators to close it after use.
UV Exposure
The polycarbonate is UV-stabilized, but it’s not immortal. In direct desert sun, we recommend replacing the OPM-1 every 5–7 years as the plastic may yellow or become brittle.
Keypad Feel
Some operators complain that the keypad is harder to use through the cover. It is—but that’s the tradeoff for protection. You get used to it.
Nail these five, and your DEIF controller will outlast the genset.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
“New Original (New Surplus)” means this cover was manufactured by DEIF, packed in its original box, and never installed. The plastic hasn’t been UV-aged, the hinge hasn’t been cycled, and the latch is fresh.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
A refurbished OPM-1 is usually a pulled cover from a decommissioned site. The plastic may be UV-damaged (yellowed, brittle), the hinge worn, the latch weak. It might look okay but fail after months in the sun.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
If the cover fails and water gets into the controller, you could lose the whole AGC. That’s a $2000 replacement plus labor. The cost difference between new and refurbished is tiny compared to that risk.
What we provide as proof
- DEIF box (or photos).
- Fit test photo.
- 12‑month warranty (against defects, not UV aging).
Pricing context
We’re priced 20% above the cheapest used covers and 10% below DEIF’s list price. That pays for the fresh plastic and the warranty.
Performance Benchmarks & Test Results
*Test conditions: Mounted on test panel with AGC-4, ambient 24 °C.*
| Metric | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IP54 test | Pass | No water ingress after spray |
| Hinge cycles | 5000 (tested) | No failure |
| UV stability | Not tested | Per DEIF spec, 5+ years outdoor |
We keep a video of the spray test—ask, and we’ll email a link.
