Description

Product Introduction

That steel mill in Indiana—the one with the 1950s-era rolling mill that had been upgraded with Digivex drives—lost a main drive last year. The mill stopped, and the maintenance crew couldn’t get it running. The fault log on the MCHN02D1AB0004A showed “field loss.” The techs checked the field wiring, the motor, even the fuses. Nothing. I pulled the drive’s field regulator board and found a blown optocoupler. One 5 part, one 15,000 drive, one week of lost production.

The ALSTOM MCHN02D1AB0004A is a digital DC drive from the Digivex family, designed for four-quadrant control of DC motors up to 400A, 500V. It’s a complete controller—armature converter, field regulator, logic power supply, and control electronics all in one chassis. The “02D1” indicates the frame size and configuration. It accepts speed or torque references from a PLC or manual control, and provides closed-loop control with tachometer or encoder feedback. In a rolling mill, it might drive a 500HP motor; in a paper machine, a 200HP helper drive.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)

A large DC drive requires a thorough test. Here’s our process.

  1. Incoming Verification
    • Match the model: MCHN02D1AB0004A. (The suffix indicates specific options.)
    • Visual inspection: Open the cabinet—look for loose connections, bulging capacitors, burnt components.
    • Check the cooling fan—should spin freely.
    • Inspect the power terminals—no corrosion.
  2. Power-On Self-Test
    • Apply control power (115V AC for logic).
    • Watch the front panel LEDs—should cycle and then show “ready.”
    • Connect to the drive via the serial port (if available).
    • Verify the drive parameters can be read.
  3. Low-Voltage Test
    • Connect a small DC motor (5HP) or a resistive load.
    • Apply low armature voltage (50V) and verify rotation/direction.
    • Test forward and reverse.
    • Test speed control loop with tachometer feedback.
  4. Field Regulator Test
    • Connect a field load (resistive or small motor field).
    • Command field current at various setpoints.
    • Verify actual current matches command within 2%.
  5. Protection Test
    • Simulate field loss—drive should trip.
    • Simulate overcurrent—drive should trip.
    • Verify fault codes are displayed.
  6. High-Voltage/High-Current Test
    • For a full-load test, we need a large load bank or motor. We do this for critical applications only.
    • At minimum, we test at 10% load to verify power section operation.
  7. Isolation Test
    • 500V megger between power terminals and ground—>10 MΩ.
    • 500V megger between control terminals and ground—>10 MΩ.
  8. Thermal Test
    • Run at 50% load for 1 hour, monitor temperature rise.
    • Fan should cycle on/off as needed.
  9. Final QC & Packaging
    • QC sticker with test date and operator initials.
    • Wrap in protective plastic.
    • Skid-mount for shipping (45 kg is heavy).
    • Test report included—parameter list, test results.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

I’ve worked on these in steel mills, paper mills, and test labs. Here’s where people go wrong.

❗Field Loss Detection
The drive has field loss detection. If you’re using a motor with a separate field supply, make sure the field current is high enough to be detected. Too low, and the drive may nuisance trip.

Tachometer Polarity
The tachometer feedback is polarity-sensitive. If you reverse the wires, the speed loop will be positive feedback—the motor will run away. Check polarity before running.

Armature Voltage Selection
The drive must be configured for the correct armature voltage. If you set it for 500V and apply 250V, it may not regulate properly. Check the motor nameplate.

Grounding
The drive must be properly grounded. A poor ground can cause noise on the analog inputs and erratic operation.

Parameter Backup
These drives have dozens of parameters. Before replacing a drive, back up the old parameters. Loading them into the new drive saves hours of setup.

Nail these five, and your MCHN02 will run that motor for years.

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

“New Original (New Surplus)” means this drive was manufactured by ALSTOM, packed in its original crate, and never installed. The capacitors have zero hours, the power semiconductors are unused, and the fan hasn’t run.

Refurbished risk in plain terms
A refurbished DC drive often comes from a decommissioned mill. The capacitors are aged—they dry out and lose capacitance. The power semiconductors may have been stressed by countless starts and stops. A refurbisher tests it at low power and calls it good. In the field, at full load, it may fail.

Real cost of a refurbished failure
If this drive fails, the production line stops. In a steel mill, that’s tens of thousands of dollars per hour. The cost of one outage dwarfs the price difference.

What we provide as proof

  • ALSTOM crate (or photos).
  • Serial number recorded.
  • Test report (low voltage, protection tests).
  • 12‑month warranty.

Pricing context
We’re priced 30% above the cheapest used drives and 20% below ALSTOM’s original list price. That pays for the fresh components and the warranty.
